I 've now read all 13 or Mr. Kerr's Bernie Gunther books and haven't been disappointed with any of them. Besides all of the interesting history as well as the author's words at the end to give the "final" histories of some of the awful characters that are involved, the dialogue "pops" and is most interesting and engaging. Also, and some might not like this (but I do), Bernie uses alot of words I usually want to look up (on a kindle it's easy with a dictionary in the background) as well as alot of allusions to cultural names, plays, mythology, etc (which you can also look up on a kindle!). All of this makes the reading of these books so very enjoyable.Bernie Gunther is a complex and somewhat tragic character and yet he is filled with ultimate integrity and compassion. This aspect of his character is shown for sure in this novel as well as Bernie goes to Greece as an insurance adjuster. Somehow all of this ties in with what he experienced before in Germany, especially right before he gets this insurance job.The only sad thing about this book and all of Mr. Kerr's other books is that he died last spring (2018) and so no "14" is not to be. So sad!
